The Franklin County Historical Society - Kittochtinny has been the county's historical society since 1898 and resides in the Old Jail, built in 1818. Guests may take a guided tour the original and 1880 cell blocks, dungeons, exercise yard, and other areas of the building. Admission: Adults $8, children $7, family rates available. See website for details. The tour involves going up and down steps and takes about an hour. A four room genealogy library is available to guests on the second floor of the jail. Librarians are on duty to assist with research. The Society also operates the John Brown House. Report to the jail first if taking a tour of the John Brown House. The gift shop is open to walk ins during open hours.

Seiberling, co-founder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. It was named Stan Hywet, Old English for stone quarry, after the property’s most prominent natural feature. The 65-room Manor House is one of the finest examples of Tudor Revival architecture in America, and the sixth largest home open to the public. The Gate Lodge at the entrance to the estate has its own historic significance. In 1935, two admitted alcoholics met there and talked long into the night, when the principles that still serve as the cornerstone of Alcoholics Anonymous were identified.

Rockcliffe Mansion is an amazing Thirteen Thousand Five Hundred SF, Thirty room, Grand Residence built to overlook the Mighty Mississippi between 1898 and 1900 by Lumber Baron John J Cruikshank, Jr. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of the original antique furnishings and fixtures are preserved. The Mansion is filled with rich Mahogany, Oak and Walnut appointments, magnificent Palladian windows and the finest interior decorations from Europe and America. Guided Tours are available daily. The mission of the National Orphan Train Complex is to collect, preserve, interpret, and disseminate knowledge about the orphan trains, and the children and agents who rode them. The museum’s collections, exhibitions, programming and research will engage riders, researchers, and the general public and create an awareness of the Orphan Train Movement.

The Interpretive Center includes 9 different pieces of railroad equipment in various stages of restoration. The Visitor Center has artifacts to take you back to the old Moffat Road railroad times, plus the gift shop has handcrafted local artisan items and kids’ toys available.
